This is a fine statement, rooted both in Scripture and the language of historic Baptist confessions. However, from its initial presentation this statement ignited a firestorm of protests among a segment of our denomination. If the Bible alone is our primary guide, then all parts of the Bible receive equal weight.

It is a flat Bible. For example, the words of Moses, Jesus and the Apostle Paul are equally authoritative.

Baptists who place Jesus over the Bible still affirm the full authority of the Bible upon their lives. They do not exalt personal experience over Scripture; rather, they base their decisions upon Scripture. But some passages are paradoxical; they say different things about the same subject. In those occasions, Jesus-first people look to Jesus for help in understanding what the biblical norm means for help in applying the Scripture to their lives. First, it refutes orthodoxy—which asserts the primacy of the Godhead: Father, Son and Holy Spirit—by exalting the Bible to near-divinity and supplanting the influence of Jesus.

Second, by elevating a thing, as precious and authoritative as the Bible is, to such lofty status, it at least implies idolatry, the worship of something other than God.

Fourth, it begs a vital question: Who then is to provide the authoritative interpretation of all Scripture? Albert Mohler, Jr. The statement [that Jesus is the criterion] was not simply eliminated. It was replaced with a sentence that is far more in keeping with historic confessions of faith. The revision is even more Christo-logically focused than the statement, and its Christological hermeneutic is stronger, not weaker.

In keeping with historic evangelical and Baptist theology, we understand that every single passage of the Bible, in the Old Testament or in the New Testament, is a testimony to Christ. Every word is true, every word is fulfilled in Christ, and Christ affirmed every word of Scripture as fully authoritative. What should we conclude from the above?

Though numerous avenues could be profitably pursued, I want to examine just one issue and per-haps the most important one. They also explain how we can live out the beatitudes of and be the salt of the earth and the light of the world Matthew introduces us to the high view of Scripture held by Jesus. Clearly what is said here pertains to the Old Testament Scriptures.

In John Jesus said,. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine.

There-fore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. First, Jesus introduced teachings that were new and striking. That is certainly the judgment of some Baptists today. Second, Jesus provides not only an emphatic denial but also a positive declaration concerning the purpose for his coming—he came to fulfill, complete the Scriptures. To set them aside was never His agenda.

To bring them to fulfillment and fruition was why He came. Don Carson has it right when he says,. Jesus fulfills the entire Old Testament in many ways.

Lifestyle and community

Because they point toward him, he has certainly not come to abolish them. Rather, he has come to fulfill them in a rich diversity of ways.

Thus the law and the prophets, far from being abolished, find their valid continuity in terms of their outworking in Jesus. The detailed prescriptions of the Old Testament may well be superceded, because whatever is prophetic must be in some sense provisional. We needed dimmers.

Lighting dimmers are a pretty simply concept. They are used to increase or decrease voltage to a dimmable lighting fixture in order to adjust its intensity. As anyone who has house lights that only turn on or off can tell you, dimmers play a valuable though often under-the-radar role in great lighting. There are four main styles of dimmers you see used in the church today, three of which are DMX controllable.

Very simply, amp circuits equate to 2, watts of power. If you break it down, that means for every watts you have, you need 5 amps. A channel, 1, watt per channel dimmer will need amps to power it all. All in all, once you get into larger dimming set ups, an electrician must be involved to ensure proper electrical distribution. Unless you are a licensed electrician, please do not take this role on yourselves.

A dimmable switch is dimming at its simplest form. Portable dimmer packs most often come in 4-channel packs though they can range from channels , taking one amp circuit and dividing it into 4 channels of watt dimming. For smaller venues, venues where dedicated amp circuits are readily available and for smaller portable setups, portable dimmers make a lot of sense.

With other dimming solutions, you centrally locate dimmers somewhere and run the power to the fixture.

Thomas Doolittle (1630-1707)

The Taunton Academy more than maintained its repute during his tutorship. A list of ninety-three of his students is given by James Manning Monthly Repository , , p. Toulmin's manuscript list. In discipline, as well as in teaching, his methods were suasive rather than authoritative; his first publication, on the 'regulation of diversions' , was designed to produce in his pupils the love of a high morale. There are points of resemblance between Grove and Doddridge.

Grove 'had the reputation of some wit,' but he lacked Doddridge's constitutional vivacity and his missionary spirit. Like Doddridge he wrote hymns; his poetical flights were stimulated by the friendship of Elizabeth Singer, afterwards the wife of Thomas Howe, the tutor's nephew. One or two of his hymns still survive in dissenting collections.

He remonstrated with Watts on the overdrawn theology of some of his hymns. Grove sought distinction as an ethical writer, but the impression of his personal character has outlasted his painstaking theory of morals. His system is a mild Christian stoicism; the function of morality is to meet the universal demand for happiness; and it was Grove's experience that 'the happiness of the present state consists more in repose than in pleasure.

Grove preached on 19 Feb. James Strong of Ilminster and William May of London preached funeral sermons; the latter's was not published. His portrait, by J. Woolaston, was engraved by Vertue in His wife died insane in ; he had thirteen children, of whom five survived him. Of Grove's publications during his lifetime Amory enumerates twenty-six, most of them being single sermons. The following may be specially mentioned:.

Some of his verses were included in the continuation of Dryden's 'Miscellany Poems,' , vol.
